Round Table is NOT:
-
a secret society
-
a funny-handshake brigade
-
anything to do with Rotary
-
full of old fogeys
-
religious or political
Round Table IS:
-
fun
-
sociable
-
a great way of helping others through fundraising and community action
-
the quickest way of settling into a new town by meeting like-minded people
Aims and Objects
Round Table was formed in 1927 by Louis Marchesi with the following Aims and
Objects: (for more on the history of Round Table click here)
-
To develop the acquaintance of young men through the medium of their various
occupations.
-
To emphasise the fact that one's calling offers an excellent medium of service
to the community.
-
To cultivate the highest ideals in business, professional and civic traditions.
-
To recognise the worthiness of all legitimate occupations and to dignify each
his own by precept and example.
-
To further the establishment of peace and goodwill in international
relationships.
-
To further these objects by meetings, lectures, discussions and other activities.
Whilst couched in the vernacular of the 1920s, these aims and objects remain
true to this day.
Motto
ADOPT, ADAPT, IMPROVE
Fun, Fellowship & Fundraising
Fun
From our regular meetings (on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Monday of every month) to the
additional social events, FUN is a large part of what we are all about.
In fact, the only limit to the type of activities that Tablers find to take part
in is their enthusiasm, so if there's something that you've always wanted to do
then Round Table is the ideal chance for you to have a go. That's why our
unofficial motto is:
'We don't just sit there'
Fellowship
Round Table is a great way of establishing new friendships. Through regular
meetings, social events and fundraising activities at local, area (usually
county), national and international level, you will get to meet more like-minded
people than would otherwise be possible. And if you move to a new town, go on
holiday, or even travel on business and are away for one night, you will always
be made welcome by the local Round Tablers.
Fundraising
One of Round Table's main
raisons d'etre
is to help the local community, and our main way of doing this is through
raising funds which we can then donate to local charities and other good causes.
Here in Exeter we have two main projects to raise money, the first one being our
annual firework display held in the grounds of St.
Loyes College, with whom we jointly organise the event. Over the years this
has become an extremely important part of the Table year and has raised our
profile within Exeter and the wider area, helped by the attendance of the BBC at
two of the last four events. As a member of Round Table, there is a curious
satisfaction to be had from watching months of effort and planning go up in
smoke! The success of this event is due in no small part to the professional
quality of the fireworks, supplied by Sonic
Fireworks. This event alone allows us to donate several thousand pounds
every year to local people and organisations.
Our other project is our Christmas float, which we tow around the streets of the
city in December each year as part of a door-to-door collection. Fortunately we
have more than enough members large enough to make a convincing Santa Claus. Again,
this generates a significant amount of money that allows us to help local causes.
Ladies Circle Round Table has a sister organisation, Ladies
